They have had glimpses of being goo din years past but have never reached that next level. BYU is 0-5 ATS off a bye while Utah State is 5-1 ATS at home with rest. This is a rivalry with these two clubs and it will go down to the wire. NFL bettors are expecting the Green Bay Packers to bounce back from their first setback of the season with a strong effort in Tampa Bay on Sunday.
Despite Green Bay’s poor record at Raymond James Stadium (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS in past six visits) and the losses to defensive stalwart Al Harris, the Packers are one of the most popular bets in Week 4 of the NFL season with just under 70 percent of bettors backing the Packers.
Bet Jam oddsmaker David Main says the simple fact the NFC North-leading Packers (2-1 SU) are underdogs is what’s attracting bettors. But he cautioned that the Bucs (2-1 SU), who lead the NFC South, appear to have a rejuvenated offense led by quarterback Brian Griese.
“Green Bay as the underdog will always be popular a bet, but Griese looked very comfortable in last week’s match against the Bears, completing 38 of 67 pass attempts for a total of 407 yards,” Main noted.
“As well, Green Bay has been vulnerable against the pass this season and will likely continue to struggle without Harris.”
The undefeated Denver Broncos, who are 9-point road favorites against the Kansas City Chiefs, are another popular pick in Week 4. Denver is receiving a whopping 78 percent of bets.
The Tennessee Titans - 3-point home favorites against the Minnesota Vikings - are getting 69 percent of the action.
“This is the ‘Backup QB Game,’” Main said, “with Kerry Collins and Gus Frerotte trying to continue their winning way.”
Most other public trends this weekend “are to be expected, as they’re popular favorites playing against poor teams,” Main added.
Others include: Dallas Cowboys (11-point home favorites) against NFC East rival Washington Redskins (Dallas, 57 percent of bets); winless Cincinnati Bengals (3½-point home favorites) against winless Cleveland Browns in a battle of AFC North bottom-feeders (Cincinnati, 62 percent); and Carolina Panthers (7-point home favorites) over Atlanta Falcons (Carolina, 59 percent).

The phillies battle Florida after losing the first game of the series last night as Garcia faces Kim. Kim has been inconsistent but looked good in his first start for the fish getting the win, while Garcia has had a tough adjustment to the NL at just 1-3 on the season. While I like the phillies to rebound and get the win they have two things going against them. The fish are hot and hitting the ball very well and the phillies pen in relief has been horrible yielding an ERA over 7 in the last three games. I am passing on the side with a lean to the fish but making a play on the total in this one tonight:Under 9 +100The weather is a factor in this game has the winds are whipping in towards the plate tonight at 22mph and will keep all fly balls in the park which will help out both pitchers and thus keep the lousy philly pen at bay.

Tim Timmons is behind the plate and although is O/U is 5/4 this year he is traditionally an under umpire. The under is 5-0 in his last 5 games with the Phillies and 2-0-1 with Garcia. The under is also 5-0 in his last 5 games with the Fish.

For my first post back to the Tips and Tools Sheet I wanted to cover interleague baseball and how to bet it. I found this article online and it seems very helpful.

When Bud Selig retires from the commissioner’s office, he will be a much discussed figure and his legacy and value to the position will be debated vehemently on both sides. Among the positives aspects Bud has brought to baseball is interleague play. Purists will hold on to the arcane argument it dilutes the purity of the game and who cares about Kansas City playing Colorado. To that end, who cares about Kansas City playing any of the regular American League teams? Just like in any sport, not every game is or needs to be important. This weekend we have the best of the best in regional match-ups with outstanding betting choices. I’ve talked to a lot of oddsmakers and handicappers over the years and most hate interleague play. The most common complaint is it breaks the rhythm of the season. Patterns develop that oddsmakers can follow on every team. Certain teams may cause more problems then others; however by and large most of those who make the numbers struggle in making sides and totals for interleague play. A former line maker in Las Vegas, who now is part of an offshore operation, explained it this way, “Baseball more then any other sport has its pace. Streaks are common; you can ride hot or cold teams. This interleague nonsense messes all this up. Especially in the big towns, these games mean something in New York, Chicago, Frisco and L.A. The managers and the players in most cases feel these are nothin’ more then exhibition games, but they’re not. In each of these cities one team is the more popular. The team that is the second class citizen and probable underdog in town, feeds off the emotion of jammed stadium and win 2 of 3 or sweeps the series. Overall my business actually picks up a little because of the interest, but I’ve had wild swings of cash flow, it can really hurt.”

To get another opinion on interleague play I checked in with an old friend Kevin, who has been a professional gambler for the last 15 years. Kevin shared his thoughts on interleague play. “I find it humorous how anxious everyone becomes about interleague baseball. It fills the stadiums, creates more interest in the sport, it’s great. For what I do, hey baseball is baseball. Somebody has to throw it, somebody’s has to hit it and somebody has to catch it. Personally I find it a refreshing during a long season and it helps me refocus. I’ve often been able to take advantage of shaky numbers from people I respect, who for whatever reason become unsure of themselves during these games. Don’t make handicapping hard is one of my rules. Good teams are good and bad teams are bad. When Buddy (Selig) started this in 1997, it was new. Now we have plenty of information on the history of all the teams. In the National League, the Fish have the best winning percentage just below .600 (actually .571) and Atlanta in second. How have the Braves done in the last 10 years? Part of the reason is bashing the American League teams. When Florida had World Series winners or pretty fair teams, they killed the AL. Worst team in NL interleague play, Pittsburgh is that really surprising? Doug, I’ve told you many times about Oakland when the leagues play against each other. The A’s will fatten your bank account in interleague play with one best records of all the teams. I’ve also told you to Play Against Tampa and the Royals and I’m adding Baltimore to the list, who now has the worse record then the other two crumbs. These teams are rotten all the time and playing against them (in interleague play) will make money.”

This will mark the 11th season of interleague play, providing substantial data to look at and compare teams. Just as before, 252 games will be played in two segments, one is this weekend and the other is June 8th-24th. This season, American League East clubs will play chiefly against the National League West; N.L. Central teams will oppose teams from the A.L. West; and N.L. East clubs will take on the A.L. Central. Teams will continue to play their primary rival in two series which is what we’ll have this weekend.

In a decade of interleague play, the A.L. has a 1,250-1,202 (.510) edge over the National League. In 2006, the A.L. overtook the N.L. in the all-time mark with a 154-98 thumping. They were led by Minnesota and Boston followed closely by Detroit and Chicago. The Twins and Red Sox were both 16-2 last season, as Minny was +14.9 units and the BoSox +14.4 units. The Tigers were 15-3 and the White Sox 14-4, good for +8.5 units. What was surprising and only those that played them would remember, Colorado was the top team in the National League in 2006 with 11-4 record for +8.45 units.

A few recent trends are mostly negative and all involve National League teams. The Dodgers are 10-23 -15.9 units, giving credence as them being a play against team. The Cubs are very close to at 10-20 -8.95 units and mildly flabbergasting is the Mets at 11-19 the last two seasons, giving up -10.65 units. Until this year, Atlanta had been the best bet for National League teams; however the last three years has caused them to fall from lofty perch with 20-28 mark. Arizona’s rebuilding over the last three years has also shown up in interleague play with 18-33 record, losing 15.5 units.

The Yankees have supplanted Oakland as the best team in baseball by percent points (.589 vs. .585), yet because of being overvalued, seldom a good wager unless playing the other New York team when the odds are more fair, especially these days. If you like rollercoaster rides, Tampa Bay may be a good choice this season. In the last four years starting with 2003, the Devils Rays have gone 3-15, 15-3, 3-15 and 11-7. Is this the year they go backwards again?
This weekend there are four main rivalries that will have the blood boiling of the fans and players admit they do get caught up in the emotion. The Windy City series starts the action, the Subway Series in New York, the I-5 in Los Angeles confrontation and the Bay Area battle. Other intriguing series to wager on are the neighboring states encounters, Minnesota at Milwaukee and Baltimore at Washington. In-state scuffles include Texas at Houston, Cincinnati at Cleveland and Florida at Tampa Bay. Thou not a natural rivalry, Atlanta and Boston have more the feel of a good NCAA football game matching strong teams from different conferences. Because of the imbalance of teams in each league Arizona and Pittsburgh will have to wait to later in the season to participate and instead go head to head. **Indiana at Illinois**--

Gamblers will have a tough time figuring the mindset of Indiana going into this game at Illinois. On one hand, perhaps Mike Davis' resignation has lifted the fog hoving over Bloomington, allowing for the Hoosiers to start playing looser? Then again, maybe the tumult of the last few weeks has left this team completely drained emotionally.

--Oddsmakers at Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Illinois as an 11 1/2-point favorite with a total of 130. -

-Indiana (13-9 straight up, 5-14 against the spread) should be at the top of the fade radar for all gamblers. The Hoosiers have lost four consecutive games, but their futility skid has been even more outlandish for our purposes. They have dropped eight in a row ATS and 11 of their last 12.

--Illinois (21-4 SU, 12-9 ATS) snapped a two-game losing streak when it beat Northwestern 63-47 on Wednesday. The Illini barely registered the spread cover as 15 1/2-point favorites. Dee Brown scored a team-high 17 points and dished out four assists.

--Bruce Weber's team has won 13 of its 14 home games, posting a 6-4 spread record in the process. --This is Indiana's first spot as a double-digit underdog this season. The Hoosiers have been underdogs six times, compiling an abysmal 1-5 spread record.

--Illinois has a 5-4 ATS mark as a double-digit 'chalk.' --When these teams met earlier this year at Assembly Hall, IU captured a 62-60 win as a 1 1/2-point 'chalk.' Marco Killingsworth scored 23 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Hoosiers. --The 'under' is 5-2-1 in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these Big Ten adversaries.

**Miami at Duke**

--LVSC opened Duke (24-1 SU, 11-11 ATS) as a 17 1/2-point favorite for Miami's visit to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

--Miami (14-11 SU, 8-12 ATS) blew a golden opportunity Thursday when it failed to hold a six-point halftime lead at Boston College. Not only that, but the Hurricanes couldn't cover the number as eight-point underdogs in the 65-54 loss.

--The 'Canes are 6-6 in ACC action, but they have lost three straight games both SU and ATS.

--Duke has won seven consecutive games since suffering its lone loss of the year at Georgetown. Over that seven-game stretch, the Blue Devils are 3-3-1 ATS thanks to back-to-back covers in their last two outings. J.J. Redick dropped 33 points on Wake Forest to lead Duke to a 93-70 win Tuesday as a 17-point favorite. Redick's four 3-pointers made him the NCAA's all-time leader, surpassing Virginia's Curtis Staples.

--Miami has only been a double-digit 'dog once this season, winning outright 81-70 at North Carolina as a 10 1/2-point 'dog. --The 'Canes are 3-5 both SU and ATS in ACC road games.

--Coach K's squad is unbeaten in 13 home games with a 5-5-1 spread ledger. --The 'over' is 15-8 overall for Duke, 6-5 in its home assignments.

** Bonus Nuggets**

--Wake Forest will play host to North Carolina today at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The Demon Deacons have been atrocious at home this year, posting an embarrassing 1-12 spread record. However, Wake is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games against UNC.

--Villanova is 6-1 ATS in the last seven head-to-head meetings against Georgetown.

--The 'under' has cashed in six straight games for Georgetown. As for 'Nova, it has watched the 'under' prevail in four consecutive games.

--The Hoyas are 4-2 ATS in their six games as underdogs this season.

When you look at college basketball games it is key to find as many match up reports as you can so you know as much information as possible and can use it in your favor. This one is heavy on numbers and can be helpful.

Big East Sneak Peek - Two national powers are in need of a victory due to the happenings of this past week. Connecticut once again did not play with full effort in succumbing to a more determined Villanova team. West Virginia suffered a loss at Pittsburgh which was no disgrace; the Mountaineers bounced back nicely and beat Georgetown with big second half. However, not being ready to play at Seton Hall suggests a big scheduling sandwich for West Virginia and they got bit. UConn leads the series with West Virginia 10-2 and has won the last five meetings, covering four times. Connecticut is perfect 6-0 and 5-1 ATS after not covering. It's a light NCAA Hoops slate on Friday so let's turn our attention to the Ivy League where the Yale Bulldogs will travel north to New Hampshire to take on the Dartmouth Big Green. This series has belonged to the Bulldogs of late. They have won four of the last five meetings and are 3-2 ATS. That includes a 72-55 January 28 win in New Haven as a 10.5-point favorite. Yale shot 55.8% from the field in the contest. Senior center Dominick Martin led Yale with 15 points and junior forward Sam Kaplan made four of five field and finished with 13 points. The Bulldogs have not played since last Saturday when they beat Cornell at home 74-65 as a 3.5-point chalk. It was the team's second win in a row and improved it to 13-10 on the year. The pointspread cover snapped a three-game ATS losing streak and improved the overall ATS mark to 7-6. The Bulldogs have won six of their last 10 games and are 4-5 ATS in that span. On the road Yale is 4-9 on the season and 3-5 ATS.

In its last two road contests it fell on back-to-back nights at Princeton and Penn back on February 3 and 4. The Bulldogs took one-point at Princeton and lost 66-49 and were a 15-point underdog at Penn, falling 74-52. Dartmouth has had a rough campaign. It entertained the Penn and Princeton duo last weekend, losing to Penn 70-51 as a 13.5-point dog and to Princeton 52-49 as a two-point dog. The two defeats dropped the Big Green to 3-18 on the season and 5-7 ATS. It has lost nine of its last 10 (2-6 ATS) with the win coming at Columbia February 4 by a 78-68 score as a five-point underdog. At home this season Dartmouth is 1-6 straight-up and 0-3 ATS. It did beat Yale here last year in the host role 53-52 as a 2.5-point underdog.

Using Trends to Hanicap

For frequent visitors of this site and some of the others you will see that I use trends when I handicap basketball. The question I get from most people is how to I use trends? Well the answer is simple, very carefully. In fact although I look at trends everyday I may not use them and sometimes even fade them. Let’s look at a few for tonight’s NBA card.

Philadelphia: 12-3 ATS after playing as a home underdog

When you first see this stat you may be compelled to think Philadelphia may be in a good situation tonight and that very well could be the case, but you would have to take in to account that this trend may not cover when the Sixers were in back to back games or off an overtime win. In fact in the the sixers are 34-30-2 ATS in back to back games after a win. This is decent but not as good looking as the above trend.

The most important part of looking at trends is to see just what kind of role they can play to support one of your selections but do not let one trend make a selection for you.

Do Your Homework and Super Trends

On this site I like to try and provide some insight on how to handicap basketball and to share some of the techniques I use on a daily basis.

Tonight I look at doing homework on a game after it is over.

Many handicappers will do research before a game and then bet it and never look at it again. I suggest you look at the box score at a minimum when a game is complete. I want to look at some of last night’s selections in the NBA. I had the Bulls -1 as my top play and they were up by 5 with a minute to go and ended up losing in overtime. Does that make my Bulls selection a bad play? No. In fact I feel really confident that I was on the right side of this but the Bulls got caught napping. So what do I get out of this in the future? Well a couple of things.

1) I may want to think twice if I am going to take the Bulls in a low lined game. Low lined games will usually mean they could be close or the teams are evenly matched. Until the Bulls can perform in crunch time I will have to consider this.

2) I grabbed something positive out of this loss last night. The Kings benched played horrible last night and the starters all played over 40 minutes last night which could leave them vulnerable for tonight’s game against Memphis especially in the second half.

Two lessons I have learned that I can use in the future, which shows why it is important to do your homework.

And the trend of the night: When NEW JERSEY team played as a Road team - Before a conference game - After a non division game - Coming off 1 ATS lost they are 38-23-1 ATS!

Public plays, good or bad in the NBA?

Later this month I will have an entire article on this but I always look a public numbers and see what people are taking for the night. I do think there is a better way to do this then going to a consensus site. Go to a forum with a high volume of selections and scroll through the threads and make note of what plays stick out.

I went to a forum today and the most popular play on the board was, Miami -11

And when I compared it to a consensus site I saw that 61% of the people were on them. That is what I like to see when I make a play in the NBA. This does not mean this team will always win but it is a good starting point. I will have more in-depth details on this system and how to exploit coming up in my monthly article!!

Handicapping NBA Part I

Handicapping the NBA Part 1

I take pride in handicapping the NBA well and looking at all of the angles that will make you money over the long haul in this difficult sport. I am going to point out some of the things you need to know to make money in the NBA and some of the pitfalls to avoid so you can have success in betting on the sport and making money. In this article I am going to cover schedule soft spots, road trips, and taking a break during the long NBA season.

First, the NBA is a very long season and should be treated like the major league baseball season. You should not be an everyday player or very often without experience you will get burned out. Burnout causes different things to different players. Many players will find it difficult to handicap on a nightly basis and will find themselves making bad plays, following bad money management or both. To avoid this I suggest setting up a schedule to avoid burnout. Professional and college basketball combined can put stress on even the most experienced bettor. Make a plan and stick to it playing only a certain amount of days per week, and weeks per month and make sure you take advantage of light schedule days and the All-Star break to rejuvenate yourself and stay fresh.

Now let’s cover some angles that I have found to be very profitable when handicapping the NBA.

Stay away from road favorites in the NBA. In any given month there are a slew of games to choose from in the NBA. You want to stay away from road favorites whenever possible. That is not to say that road favorites do not cover, I just believe they have to be taken in stride and when taking them you must give them extra consideration.

Look for soft spots in the schedule. Earlier this year the Spurs traveled to Atlanta and the Spurs were installed as twelve point favorites. First of all they should have been avoided as a road favorite, however they were also in a soft spot in the schedule as they played at home the night before and the trip to Atlanta was a one game road trip. Needless to say they did not even come close to covering. The schedule is very important in the NBA and should be looked at every night very closely.

When speaking of schedule, one f the most profitable angles that NBA handicappers use is rested teams and playing against teams that have played four games in five nights. I do think this is an important angle to know but it does need some additional research before playing it blindly. For example most teams in the NBA when they go on a road trip are looking to just go .500 and often if they achieve that early in the trip, they will not care as much as the road trip nears its end. However sometimes if the road trip has started poorly they will try to win at the end of the trip to return home on a positive night. For example the Lakers just went on a road trip and in the middle they dismantled losing to teams like Charlotte, and New Orleans, followed by a trouncing by the Mavericks. Since they have not achieved the goal on the road trip they wanted to finish strong and did by upsetting the Rockets in Houston as seven point dogs, although they have played several nights leading up to that game.

The schedule is important but should be considered with other variables, such as injuries, televised games, and heavy public betting. In the next installment I will cover handicapping the NBA using public perception, line moves and more.
